History
In 1912 during the Miners’ strike, colliery workers and local merchants of Halfway and the surrounding district decided to form a Bowling Club for their leisure activities. Through donations from merchants and hard work from the colliery workers, the club was built on land leased by the Duke of Hamilton, and was officially opened in 1913. Mr J. McComb was the first President and Mr J. Sillers the first Club Champion. In 1914, the second green was commissioned from financial assistance, again from local merchants.
It was not until 1956 that building materials were available in quantity to allow the present clubhouse to be built by extending the original clubhouse which was converted into locker rooms. The cost of £3,300 seems insignificant today, but was of significant proportion for the club at the time.
During 1966 saw the licence for the sale of spirits and in 1972, a new kitchen and bar servery were installed for £5,800. In 1982, new ladies and gents locker rooms were built and the old locker rooms converted into the existing comfortable lounge.
The club celebrated it’s centenary year in 2013 and several events (including a civic reception in Rutherglen Town Hall) were held to mark the occasion. The below badge was commissioned as part of the celebrations.
